Brian Lara’s breathtaking 400 not out versus England
It takes a genius to create a world record and it takes a Brian Lara to re-claim one!
On the third day of the fourth and final Test against England in 2004, he did the same, plundering the famed English attack to all parts of the ground. Going into the final Test at Antigua with the series already lost, West Indies batted first scoring a mammoth 751/5 declared, the highlight of the inning being the effort of Brian Lara. In an epic which saw him play 582 balls studded with 43 fours and 4 sixes, he left the England bowlers look completely hapless.
The record was brought up on the third day when Lara swept Garetth Batty to fine leg amidst a standing ovation from the entire crowd. England in reply scored were bundled out for 285 in their first essay. Following on they came up with an improved performance scoring 422/5 on the back of a ton from Michael Vaughan. The match ended in a draw but Brian Charles Lara once again drove the point that he was a champion in every sense of the word.
Earlier to this, it was Matthew Hayden who had the world record, after breaking Lara’s previous record of 375 runs, by making a total of 380 in an innings. Here are the top 6 individual scores in test cricket in an innings -
- Brian Lara 400 WI vs England, Antigua 2004
- Matthew Hayden 380 Aus v Zim, Perth 2003
- Brian Lara 375 WI v England, Antigua 1994
- Gary Sobers 365 not out WI v Pakistan, Kingston 1957
- Len Hutton 364 England v Aus, The Oval 1938
- Sanath Jayasuriya 340 SL v India, Colombo 1997
A few words by Lara after he created this new world record -
“It’s a great feeling but it is dampened by the series result”, and talking about Matthew Hayden, Lara said “Matt said he had been listening to it and was very happy for me, “He enjoyed the period he had the record and I am sure he is capable of doing it again, as are a lot of very good batsmen around the world, and I really appreciated that he took the time out to make the call.”
The score of 400* is the highest in the International test cricket, but in the first class cricket, Lara holds a record with 501* innings against Durham.
